Custom Fabric Picture Frame Mats

I'm so excited about today's post because it's a DIY I've been dying to do somewhere in our home. I've recently been giving our home office a few updates and finally had the perfect spot to make a custom fabric picture frame mats. It adds so much interest to a print, photo, or a piece of art that I just had to give it a go. So if you want to add a touch of personality and texture to your frame, read on. This simple DIY project is a fantastic way to elevate your décor and showcase your cherished memories in a unique and stylish way. Plus, it's a great way to use up those fabric scraps you've been hoarding!

What you'll need: 

  1. Mat Board - you can usually find them at craft stores or online.

  2. Fabric - I chose a red and white striped fabric that I'm really loving.

  3. Mod Podge - to attach the fabric to the mat board.

  4. Brush - for applying the Mod Podge

  5. Scissors

  6. Pen

  7. Iron and Ironing board

 Let's get started:

  1. Iron any wrinkles from your fabric and lay it flat with the back side facing up. Position your mat upside down on the fabric, paying attention to place it down straight. I used the lines on the fabric to help me with this part. Use a ruler if your fabric doesn’t have straight lines.

  2. Cut the fabric leaving a 1/2″-1″ of extra on all sides.

  3. With your mat still positioned in place, draw a rectangle on the inside of the mat, with about 1/2”-1” of fabric. Cut out the middle.

  4. Diagonally cut up to your corners so that you can easily fold the fabric up.

  5. Apply Mod Podge to the back of the mat and fold over the fabric and press firmly. 

  6. Let the mat dry completely before you place it back into your frame.

I removed the background from cute pictures of my dog, Charlie, and printed them at home to add to my fabric picture frame mats. I LOVE how they turned out! I especially love that they show off my beloved dog in such a cute way.
