How to clean your Washer & Dryer without Harsh Chemicals
Let's talk about your washer and dryer. These two machines are one of the hardest working appliances in your home so why not show them a little TLC every once in a while?
I try to give mine a thorough cleaning at least once a quarter. Not only does this prevent from mold from settling in your machine but may also prevent a scary event, like a fire. That was enough motivation for me to make sure I make this a part of my cleaning routine! Plus, no one wants a dirty machine when your laundry looks all pretty right?! Let's start with the WASHER.

Do you notice that after a wash the machine starts to smell a little moldy? That is because the machine stays wet inside, even after you have finished your load which makes it a breeding ground for mold. Not a nice combination when all you are trying to do is get clean clothes right?!
Lets get to cleaning! Below are the steps I take to make sure my washer stays in perfect shape to handle all of life's messes.
Cleaning Supplies:
Steps:
- Wipe down the outside of the washing machine with a microfiber cloth and Mrs. Meyers Multi-Surface Concentrate. I specifically like using this product because it is strong enough to clean any dried up gunk but also gentle enough that it doesn't disturb or rub off the printed lettering on the washer panel. This is a good time to clean the soap and bleach reservoirs.
- Next, set the machine in the hottest, longest wash cycle.
- As the machine fills with water, add two cups of vinegar and one cup of baking soda.
- Allow the machine to run for at least one minute with the door closed.
- After one minute, open the washer door and leave open for one hour. Allowing the machine to soak in the mixture.
- After an hour has passed, close the door and let it finish the cycle.
- Once complete, take a look inside and enjoy your nice clean washing machine!
Tip: I try to leave the door open for at least an hour or two after each wash allowing the machine to dry inside. This helps prevent any mildew from forming.
And now the DRYER
Did you know that most home fires start with your dryer? How scary is that?! As soon as I read that, I made my husband and I learn how to thoroughly clean our dryer so we can prevent this.
Cleaning Supplies:
Steps:
- Start by vacuuming the lint tray and area. Use the wand attachment on your vacuum to get into the lint area and remove as much lint as possible. You can also use a duster with a long head to get into this area if you do not have the vacuum want attachment.
- Next, vacuum the inside of the dryer paying close attention to the drum.
- Use Mrs. Meyers Multi-Surface Concentrate and a microfiber cloth to wipe down the outside of the machine. Also, clean the inside of the dryer, paying close attention to the dryer drum, door, and seams.
- Detach the dryer duct and clean it out. (Make sure you read your owner's manual for your specific model). We simply removed the ring around the duct and used a the vacuum and the wand attachment to make sure we got the duct nice and clean.
- Once you are satisfied with the duct, reattach it to the machine.
- Don't forget to check the vent outside your home too and clear of any debris!
