Why I rarely shop at off-priced retail stores
Over the past couple of years I've been noticing a trend with my home decor shopping habits. I used to love going to Home Goods or TJMaxx to scour the isles to see if there was anything in there that I absolutely had to have for my home. Of course, I always seemed to find something that I couldn't live without and I would bring it home to live with it for couple of months or years.
I eventually would find myself in a fit of organizing everything in our home (thank you Marie Kondo) and those same decor pieces that I just had to have a couple of months back, made it into my donate pile.
I was going to those stores to just browse with no real plan of what I wanted or actually needed for my home. So even though those things may have been pretty, they just didn't have staying power because I didn't truly have a need and/or space for them.
Where I shop instead
My absolute favorite place to shop for furniture now a days in Facebook Marketplace. I have scored so many high quality second hand furniture pieces that there's no way I would have ever been able to afford them new.
What I like about shopping on the Facebook Marketplace is that I have to search for what I'm looking for, so I'm not just bombarded with thousands of furniture pieces but my results are curated to what I'm currently searching for.
I've also become increasingly interested in shopping at my local thrift stores rather than Home Goods because I tend to find higher quality items at much better prices. If you visit these places often, you start to get a feel for what is a bargain and what's not, making the hunt that much more fun and the score that much more sweet!
To avoid buying items that are just at a good price, I now keep a running list of décor and furniture pieces that I would I would love to have in my home. For example, I'm on the hunt for a pair of x-shaped foot stools to place underneath my long console in our family room. I know that with patience I will eventually find them at a price that I'm willing to pay, instead of the $200+ they cost new.
Slowly over time, I've been scoring pieces that make my home feel original because not everyone can go buy it at their big box store.
I recently scored this super long console on Facebook Marketplace to replace a dresser I had in the same spot and I was able to very cheaply update it to fit our décor style in our home without spending a ton of money. I sold my old dresser for $200, I got this console and two mirrors for $200. A little paint and new hardware and I now have a custom piece that fits my space perfectly. The cost of buying new would have easily been in the thousands. Keep your eyes out for the blog post coming soon!
I hope this post encourages you to try thrifting and score some good deals on Facebook Marketplace. I can't wait to see what you score!
