Top 5 Areas in your Home to Declutter for a Successful Year Ahead

January. A fresh start. A time for new beginnings. And if you're anything like me, that includes the desire to declutter our homes and start the year off in an organized space. After all the chaos and influx of "things" during the holiday season, January feels like the perfect time to tackle home organization.

Today I'm sharing the top five spaces that I always declutter to set the stage for a successful and organized year:

Linen Closets

Let's be honest, do you really need 10+ sets of towels? A few years ago, we decided to limit ourselves to two sets of towels per person in our household, and it has made a world of difference! The same goes for bed sheets – two sets per bed ensures we always have a clean set ready. Of course, we make exceptions for seasonal items like flannel sheets for winter and extra blankets. Also remember to keep a couple of extras for guests.

For hand towels, we keep a slightly larger supply since we use them more frequently. This year, I focused on paring down our collection, getting rid of any towels that looked worn or dingy.

Kitchen Cabinets and Drawers

The kitchen is a constant battleground for clutter. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, I tackle one cabinet or drawer at a time. I meticulously go through each item, asking myself if I truly use and love it. You'd be amazed at how much "stuff" accumulates in the kitchen! Utilizing organizers and shelves helps me maximize space while ensuring easy access to the items I need.

Knife Organization

Bathroom Vanity

I recently decluttered our bathroom vanity, and let me tell you, I ended up with a full bag of expired products and things we no longer use. It was incredible how much space I regained by simply taking the time to pull everything out, give the cabinet a good clean, and then thoughtfully return only the essentials. I used drawer organizers that I already had on hand to corral things together, ensuring everything had a spot.

Under-the-Bed Storage

Our kids' rooms are notorious for becoming toy black holes. We do a toy purge before Christmas, and we also dedicate time to decluttering after the holidays. I pay special attention to under-the-bed storage, ensuring that only the most loved and used toys reside in this valuable space.

Coat Closet

The coat closet can quickly become a chaotic mess. If yours is anything like mine, it's time for a deep clean and declutter at least once a year. Remember to use vertical space – install shelves and hooks to maximize storage. Living in Florida, our coat closet plays a different role than most as we don't have that much need for coats here. So we use the back of the door hooks for our light coats and the rest of the closet is more used as storage. I maximized storage by using hanging shelves and we keep everything from extra poop bags for our dog, to vacuum accessories and luggage. This demonstrates how you can adapt these decluttering tips to your specific needs and living situation.

Extra Motivation: If you're feeling extra motivated, January is the perfect time to tackle your clothes closet. Try on everything to see what still fits and what you actually wear. Donate or sell anything that no longer serves you. Organize by category and utilize space-saving techniques like folding clothes neatly, using drawer dividers, and investing in a hanging shoe organizer.

Remember: Decluttering is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. It doesn't need to cost a lot of money or be all aesthetically pleasing. If you’re decluttering for the first time, or it’s been a while since you last did it, I suggest that you start by just decluttering and looking for ways to organize your space with what you already have. Once you’ve done that, you can worry about making a space look “pretty.”

By dedicating a little time each month to decluttering specific areas, you can maintain a more organized and less stressful home throughout the year.

I hope these tips help you achieve a more organized and clutter-free home this January!
