How to have a Cleaner Home Every Day
Is one of your goals this year to have a more clean and organized home? As soon as the new year rolls around, I'm already thinking and planning what home projects I want to tackle and what areas of the house need extra attention.
As I started making my list, I couldn't help but get overwhelmed with the amount of work that needs to be completed. So I decided to take a different approach and tackle my projects little by little spread out throughout a couple of months rather than a few days or weeks. Not only has this approached worked, but it prevents me from getting burned out quickly, allowing me plenty of time to concentrate on the task at hand. After a couple of year's of following this approach, I'm now able to complete all my deep cleaning routines in a couple of weeks, rather than months.
This way of organizing can be applied to almost every part of your home and can make deep cleaning your home into a task that you build into your day or week rather something that you stress over.
Kitchen
If your home is anything like ours, the kitchen is one of the hardest working rooms in your house. So how do you tackle deep cleaning such a big area? It all depends on your kitchen and how you use it, so I will give you the example of my kitchen. I have both upper and lower cabinets filled with stuff along with a small walk-in pantry. I try to keep the kitchen pretty clean on the daily by wiping down counters, vacuuming the floor, putting dirty dishes in the dishwasher, clean dishes in their proper place, and cleaning the sink before I go to bed for the day.
When I beginning my deep cleaning process, I tackle my kitchen in parts. As much as the clean freak in me wanted to do it all in one go, with a little one running around, it's almost impossible to dedicate a couple of hours to just cleaning.
KITCHEN DEEP CLEANING SCHEDULE:
- Day 1: Kitchen Drawers
- Day 2: Lower Cabinets
- Day 3: Upper Cabinets
- Day 4: Refrigerator and Freezer
- Day 5: Pantry
- Day 6: Floors
- Day 7: Windows & Doors
First step is to set up a designated space in your home where you will collect all the items that you no longer want to keep. It can simply be a box or a table, anywhere where you will be able to collect the items so that they can be packed up and donated.
I take everything out of the cabinets or drawers, clean them with my favorite multi-surface cleaner (inside & out), decide what comes back in the cabinet and what will be donated before I organize the keepers back in.
Day by day, I tackle a different area in my kitchen This schedule may seem like a lot, and if it is, all you have to do is adjust it to fit your available time. The schedule above took me about 1 hour to 1.5 hours per day while my little one napped. After my kitchen is complete I move on to the next area in my home that needs the most help.
Laundry Room
We have a small room with only two cabinets, but I know that if I dread going into that room, I won't want to do the laundry. It's one of the worst tasks you could ask me to do! So I try to tackle deep cleaning this space next so that I can get it over with and hopefully encourage me to do some laundry!
LAUNDRY ROOM DEEP CLEANING SCHEDULE
- Day 1: Cabinets and/or shelves
- Day 2: Washer & Dryer
- Day 3: Floors
- Day 4: Windows & doors
I tackle the cabinets in the laundry room the same way I tackle the ones in the kitchen, by removing everything that's inside and wiping the cabinets down, inside and out. Lastly, I finish by tackling the floors, using my vacuum to get to all those hard to reach areas around the machines and then I steam the floors.
BEDROOMS
The bedrooms are one of those areas that could be really easy or take even longer than the kitchen, it all depends on how you use the space. Remember that all of these schedules are customizable, so tackle the space at your own pace and you will have an organized bedroom in no time!
BEDROOM DEEP CLEANING SCHEDULE
- Day 1: Nightstands
- Day 2: Dresser(s)
- Day 3: Clean windows, blinds, & doors.
- Day 4: Dust, clean, and if necessary organize under the bed.
- Day 5: Dust: ceiling fan and/or light, baseboards, doors, shelves, etc.
- Day 6: Vacuum and/or steam floors
- Day 7: Flip, vacuum mattress. Wash all bedding and re-make bed.
- Day 8: Closet(s)
Like I mentioned above, depending on your room you could combine some of these days together or add days. All that matters is that you're working through the clutter and removing everything, cleaning, and going through each piece deciding if you will keep it, donate it, move it to another room, etc.
Dining Room
We have a pretty small dining room that is part of the great room, so I don't really have a lot to do in here. But if you are one of the lucky people that get's to have a proper dining room, this is the time where you get to organize and clean this space.
DINING ROOM DEEP CLEANING SCHEDULE
- Day 1: Empty all cabinets, buffet, drawers and/or shelves and clean, organize and purge
- Day 2: Clean windows, blinds, & doors.
- Day 3: Dust & clean all surfaces.
- Day 4: Vacuum and/or steam floors
It's all about paying atentio
Family Room
The family room is another one of those rooms that may either take you a couple of days or just one depending on how you use the space so make sure you adjust the schedule to fit your needs.
FAMILY ROOM DEEP CLEANING SCHEDULE
- Day 1: Empty all shelves, drawers, cabinets etc and clean, organize, & purge.
- Day 2: Clean windows, blinds, & doors.
- Day 3: Dust & clean all surfaces.
- Day 4: Vacuum and/or steam floors
Apply this way of scheduling your cleaning for any other areas in your home that require a little extra TLC. The more rooms you tackle, the easier that it will be to KEEP things clean and organized, which is the overall goal, no? The point is to tackle one are of your home per day, whether it be for 30 minutes or an hour, you decide. It's all about making it work with your schedule. Little by little, you will be closer to a more organized and clean home!
