Fall into Style: 5 Simple Home Updates You Can Incorporate Today

Now that the weather is beginning to get a little crisp, it’s the perfect time to embrace a cozy fall vibe in your home. I’ve been making changes in our home and thought I would share some trends that I’ve been seeing in the interior decorating world and how I’m incorporating them into my home. If your’re looking to make a sublt change or a bold statement, these five simple updates can help you style your space for the season. Let’s create a warm, inviting atmosphere that celebrates the beauty of autumn!

Heirloom Pieces

A meaningful way to add character to your home this fall is by using heirloom pieces. These pieces have meaning, tell a story, and create a sense of nostalgia. I have several art pieces in my home that were painted by my grandmother. I love incorporating them in my home decor because not only do they bring back memories of watching her paint some of them, but I also get to share them with my kids. The key to making heirloom pieces look good is incorporating antiques along with more modern pieces, as it showcases them in a whole new light. Every time I use any of my mom’s wedding china or one of my grandma’s embroidered napkins it adds a personal touch to my space that I love.

Add a Blanket to the Back of the Couch

I have to admit that I didn’t understand the appeal of putting a blanket on the back of your couch before I tried it. But now that I’ve done it, I don’t think that I can go back. Something as simple as draping a warm blanket over the back of your couch can completely change your space. Not only is it useful as the temperatures drop, but it’s also stylish. The key is to choose a throw that is soft and textured in warm fall colors like burnt orange, deep red, or mustard yellow. Or any color that reminds you of fall! Such a simple, affordable addition with a big impact.

Cozy Fabrics

I recently bought a velvet quilt for my bedroom in a deep plum color (see the post here) and it got me thinking about how fabrics can make you feel. As soon as I put that silky, velvety quilt on my bed, the room felt cozy and warm - a feeling that I strive to achieve as the cooler weather arrives. This tip is not just for bed sheets and throw blankets, but also for throw pillows and curtains. Something as simple as updating throw pillows to more vibrant, fall colors, in cozy fabrics can help create a warm, welcoming space. I recently added curtains to our front door and instantly fell in love with the look. The fabric not only brought in color and texture that the space desperately needed.

Layer in Lighting

One way to improve the coziness factor in your space is to focus on lighting. As the days start to get shorter, it’s important to add mood lighting to every space in your home. Layering lighting in a room can make it feel more inviting and cozy. Think table lamps, floor lamps, candle lamps - any lamp is fair game. I recently added a candle light in my kids’ bathroom and not only does it smell good in there, but it also looks pretty and less harsh than by using the overhead light.

Forage for your Decor

One of my favorite ways to instatly add a little drama to my space is by going outside and finding a beautiful branch or flower to decorate. We have a few rose bushes in our flower bed that I love to clip and use whenever I’m in the mood for flowers. In our hallway, I love to get a pretty stem from one of our trees because it instantly helps bring in height and drama.
